What would you say was the most important subject you studied in school? Was it science or mathematics? Was it the arts or physical education? Maybe it was the social sciences or history? Perhaps it was English, maybe music? But most probably you never covered a central subject of a good education. Any ideas? As a high school teacher for thirty-four years, I think one of the main subjects of a good education is the proper study of language and I don't mean grammar, the writing of essays and literature. I'm talking about language and meaning because the very words we use daily have a powerful influence on how we think and what we think.

I attended the trustees' meeting on June 16, 2011, of the Toronto Catholic District School Board. Some minor changes were made to the recently passed Ministry of Education's Equity Strategy. If you are concerned about the state of Catholic education in Ontario, I would like to respectfully share some of my observations. On the major amendments, a vote was taken to remand the decision once again to a future meeting.

Have you heard of YOUCAT? YOUCAT is short for Youth Catechism of the Catholic Church. The book will be officially launched on World Youth Day 2011 in Madrid. However, you can buy it already. This is a great spiritual resource for the whole family. It was developed with the help of young Catholics and written for high-school age students and young adults. YOUCAT is graphically appealing and a modern expression of the Catholic Faith.

“I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be lifted up and be thrown into the sea,’ and does not doubt it in his heart but believes that what he says will happen, it will be done for him.” (Mark: 11: 23) How many times have we heard those words? But do we believe them? Regardless of what we believe in our hearts, I think in these words, we find the profound mystery of the conversion of Dr. Bernard Nathanson. More on this later.

Last week Dr. Nathanson died.

See, I have set before you today life and prosperity, death and adversity; I call heaven and earth to witness against you today that I have set before you life and death, blessing and curses. Choose life so that you and your descendants may live.

First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings should be made for everyone, for kings and all who are in high positions, so that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and dignity. This is right and is acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour, who desires everyone to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.
