In Luke 2: 15-20, we find the reason why Christians have the season of Advent to prepare to celebrate Christmas: the birth of Jesus. The evangelist tells us,

Now it happened that when the angels had gone from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, 'Let us go to Bethlehem and see this event which the Lord has made known to us.' So they hurried away and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in the manger. When they saw the child they repeated what they had been told about him, and everyone who heard it was astonished at what the shepherds said to them. As for Mary, she treasured all these things and pondered them in her heart. And the shepherds went back glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, just as they had been told.

There are some activities in our Christian communities that essentially remain little analyzed, talked about and even questioned. We are talking about funerals and legacy trusts. Death and money are always difficult subjects to discuss. While many of our parishes in the Archdiocese of Toronto have no active parish plan, they do have much information on Catholic funerals and estate planning.

At a recent parish charity fundraiser, we were given a booklet about the event.

In Genesis 1: 27, we find the creation of human beings explained this way, "God created man in the image of himself, in the image of God he created him, male and female." So, we were made either of one sex or the other: male or female. If we add this up, there are two sexes, right? Not so, according to the new and progressive arithmetic of political correctness. In this ever-changing gender wonderland, the female sex and the male sex no longer make two.

We live in a society that has come to accept the idea that things must happen quickly and self-gratification cannot be delayed. We find it difficult to wait for anything. This is surely in part as a result of our computers, our cell phones and our drive-thrus. It's a society that doesn't like to stop and observe. We easily lose our patience and tempers can suddenly flair.

When it comes to our faith, don't we often approach it with the same attitude.

In Prince Edward Island there's a new Parent's Guide to "Children's Sexual Behaviours." The problem with the document is found in the Introduction with this statement: "It is important to keep in mind that there are no absolutes." This unqualified declaration alone should seriously concern parents. How can there be no "absolutes" when it comes to sexual behaviors.

In the month of October, the Magnificat had a wonderful reflection for the day called "Our Habitual Voluntary Sins." I used it for my last confession and thought that there may be others who may want to do the same. I merely changed the plural pronoun "our" whenever it appears to the singular "my." I took a little to think about each section and how it applied to me. My confessor asked for a copy.

Wells Fargo one of the large banks in the United States this year launched it's anti-bullying video to support LGBT youth and Pride 2013. The "It Gets Better" video is the same kind of resource that was used here in Ontario to pass the "Equity and Inclusive education Strategy" in all public and separate schools. Wells Fargo has and will participate in over fifty Pride 2013 events.

Do Canadians really want to give legal permission to be killed by someone else? Do they really want a doctor or nurse, usually at the most vulnerable point in their lives, to decide whether to live or die? This is what is being proposed in Quebec with Bill 52.  Euthanasia is plain and simple legalized state killing.

The General Secretariat of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops, CCCB, has sent a Preparatory Document to the Bishops of Canada. This is to get ready for the Synod of Bishops that will meet in Rome on October 5-19, 2014. We are told they will be consulting the clergy and laity in their dioceses. A questionnaire will be used to gather information. The process will be repeated in dioceses all over the world and then sent to the CCCB.

Germany this past week became the first nation to legally allow parents to register a child's birth certificate with a third gender called "intermediate." This is being advanced to avoid sexual discrimination. No doubt there will pressure for all member states of the European Union to do like wise.

What this means is that parents of a newborn can choose the designation of "blank" on the child's birth certificate along with "female" and "male" as of November 1, 2013.

See, I have set before you today life and prosperity, death and adversity; I call heaven and earth to witness against you today that I have set before you life and death, blessing and curses. Choose life so that you and your descendants may live.

First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings should be made for everyone, for kings and all who are in high positions, so that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and dignity. This is right and is acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour, who desires everyone to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.
