We don't have to tell parents that Christian teaching has for many decades been under attack in our schools and our public institutions. Even the Catholic schools aren't much different. Children are no longer getting instruction in the faith at school and in most parishes it has become something of the past. The business of daily running the parish and home life has too often made us forget the importance of teaching the Catechism to our children and learning it ourselves. So in this blog entry rather than list the serious moral ills that are accepted as normal today, let's instead focus on the idea of how best to create a Christian culture in our homes and parishes. Faith matters are best addressed by being proactive.

In Genesis we read, "On the seventh day God had completed the work he had been doing. He rested on the seventh day after all the work he had been doing, God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on that day he rested after all his work of creating." (2: 2-3)

It was Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI that gave Christians and non-believers good advice about resting and talking a vacation. The Holy Father suggested a number of ideas to keep in mind for a spiritually sound and happy holiday.

First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings should be made for everyone, for kings and all who are in high positions, so that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and dignity. This is right and is acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour, who desires everyone to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.
