OPEN LETTER TO PREMIER WYNNE AND MINISTER SANDALS

Dear Minister Sandals and Premier Wynne:

If, as you have said publicly, parents have the right to withdraw their children from sections of the sex education curriculum that contradict their beliefs or cultural values, then why is a Hamilton father still in court after nearly two years legally battling to get this right? The Education Act does give parents the right to direct their children's education. In view of this, we believe that there has been a gross violation of parental rights and the freedom of belief.

As Chair of the Parental Rights in Education Defense Fund (PRIEDF), we hope you reach out to this family and help resolve the issue that has cost the family money, criticism and much suffering.

Parents will be happy to learn that the Archdiocese of Toronto's Cardinal Thomas Collins made a public statement yesterday saying that Catholic schools will not implement any new teachings that aren't consistent with the Catholic faith. The media statement was made in response to the release of the government's new sex education curriculum for Ontario schools. Catholics have the constitutional right to Catholic education.

Premier Kathleen Wynne didn't run an election campaign on the issue and wasn't elected to pass the revised 2015 revised Physical and Health Education curriculum that was dropped by the former leader Dalton McGuinty. It was shelved in 2010 because parents complained the sex education contents were too age-inappropriate and explicit. The latest version is just as misguided and potentially dangerous to the well being of children.

For parents who are concerned about Gay/Straight Alliances starting up in Catholic schools, their worries are justified. Especially now that current Liberal government plans to introduce its radical sex education curriculum for the school year 2015-16. Just a week ago I attended a presentation sponsored by the Toronto District School Board, Humber River Hospital and the Griffin Centre. It was held at the Keele Site. We were there for some of the talks.

Fr. Rosica the CEO of Salt and Light Television has threatened to sue Toronto Catholic blogger at Vox Cantoris. David Domet who writes the popular blog, that has received well over 600,000 pageviews, got a letter dated February 17 from the law office of Fogler Rubinoff informing him of the legal action.

Today is Ash Wednesday. In the liturgical year, this begins the time of Lent. In Chapter 8 of Thomas a Kempis' Imitation of Christ and titled "The Disciple," we have an appropriate passage for reflection. It's in the 2015 February edition of the Magnificat, a missalette with all the daily and Sunday Masses scripture readings. We share today's mediation with our readers:

I will speak to my Lord, I who am but dust and ashes.

Forty students from the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance took a classical approach to the flashmob as they flashwaltzed Tchaikovsky's Waltz of the Flowers at the Sarah Wetsman Davidson Hospital Tower in Jerusalem.

"O Canada!" how can "God keep our land glorious and free!" when our political correct society is doing its utmost to remove all signs of the Creator from public institutions and the public square? An example of this can be seen in our post modern Christian family that has been secularized and come under much government control. On Monday in Ontario, we celebrate Family Day.

Last week, the Supreme Court of Canada by a decision of 9 to 0, approved what is the intentional killing of people. However, they used the much more positive sounding words of "physician-assisted suicide" and "the right to die." With the legalization of euthanasia, Canadians should not be surprised of the unsuspecting evils that  the court has unleashed on them by further expanding the culture of death. Here are just a few of the dark questions that need to be asked.

Last Friday, the Supreme Court of Canada struck down the law against assisted-suicide and gave the green light to "physician-assisted death" under some general conditions. The court instructed Parliament to take a year to come up with legislation to work out the details. It's another legal step forward for the culture of death in Canada. Every Canadian that believes in the right to life should be concerned.

See, I have set before you today life and prosperity, death and adversity; I call heaven and earth to witness against you today that I have set before you life and death, blessing and curses. Choose life so that you and your descendants may live.

First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings should be made for everyone, for kings and all who are in high positions, so that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and dignity. This is right and is acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour, who desires everyone to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.
