Imagine a government telling students, parents, teachers and administrators that they cannot use the words "mother" and "father" any more when communicating. Imagine a government forcing parents to no longer refer to their children as "boy" or "girl" or "him" and "here." Imagine a government dictating to parents that "Self-identification is the sole measure of an individual’s sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression...." But there's no need to imagine since this is exactly what the Alberta government has done. It's all part of a plan to tell parents how to think about the human person, human sexuality and family. Parental rights don't matter at all. Religious freedom isn't important. The government language police knows better. I wish we were kidding about all of this.

Last Friday on January 22 in the United States the liturgy celebrated the sanctity and dignity of human life. It's actually a day of prayer for the protection of the unborn. This is to support the work done by the March for Life held each year in Washington, D. C. and other cities across the United States. Canada too should have a national day of prayer to raise awareness about the right to life from conception to natural death.

Discrimination in Canada against Christians is sadly happening in too many places. Trinity Western University has had to fight a legal battle to try to get its future law graduates to be able to get employment in most provinces. Some of Canada's law societies have decided that Christian graduates need not apply. Voices of the Nations had their permit to perform at Yonge-Dundas Square revoked last year because they sing Christian songs.

In the United States and Canada, there's a government push to force schools, including Catholic schools, to teach a definition of the human person that contradicts Catholic doctrine. The secular view of the person conflicts with the Catholic belief that human beings are created male or female and made in the image of God. And that God has a plan for each human being that any good government should fully respect.

A number of bishops in Alberta have taken a strong stand against "gender identity" being taught in Catholic schools. We fully support Bishop Paul Terrio. Bishop Fred Henry, Archbishop Richard Smith and Archbishop Gerrard Pettipas. They need our prayers and know that we back them. One of the ways to do this is to sign the petition started by LifeSiteNews. First, here is some of the background information on the issue from LifeSiteNews and we re-print it with their permission.

The Catholic Civil Rights League's (CCRL) work should be known by every parish in Canada.

Our Prime Minster has spoken at the Davos conference this week. Canadian media have made the event sound so important. Trudeau is there to no less than re-brand the Canadian economy as more than just resources and invite foreign investors to put their money in Canada. For the bottom line, everything can and must be rationalized. The conference is to look at ways to reduce the disparity between the rich and poor.

This is the Year of Mercy and the opening of the Holy Door. It's a great world Church event. But without repentance and amends for sins what good is opening the "Holy Door?" What good is all this mercy if the confessionals are mostly empty? In the Archdiocese of Toronto the Family of Faith campaign has successfully raised funds well in excess of $100,000,000 for capital and pastoral projects.

The Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops and The Evangelical Fellowship of Canada last year issued a joint "Declaration on Euthanasia and Assisted Suicide." We should send a message to our politicians that we don't believe in laws that permit the intentional killing of more Canadians either through euthanasia, assisted-suicide or abortion. State killing will not solve our individual or societal problems but will only create more legislated evil.

After the Paris terror attacks, Joann Sfar and illustrator for Charlie Hebdo said this, "We shouldn't be praying for Paris because it doesn't need any more religion." The statement was made in response to the hashtag circulating the globe with the words, "Pray for Paris." While the reaction doesn't represent an entire nation, we can ask: how did France become so anti-religious and even come to reject its Christian roots? Taking a look at some of its more recent history helps to explain it.

See, I have set before you today life and prosperity, death and adversity; I call heaven and earth to witness against you today that I have set before you life and death, blessing and curses. Choose life so that you and your descendants may live.

First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings should be made for everyone, for kings and all who are in high positions, so that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and dignity. This is right and is acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour, who desires everyone to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.
