The United States President Donald Trump issued a wonderful message for Christmas that we just had to share with our readers. As he had promised, he brings "Merry Christmas" back to the White House and the nation. This is something that Americans couldn't even imagine with the former administration of Barach Obama.

President Trump says much more than just "Merry Christmas." He speaks of Jesus Christ as "God" and "Our Lord and Savior." What a breath of fresh air! God does work in mysterious ways. Christmas 2017 for Christians in America (and for all people of good will) shows signs of hope. We thank President Trump and wish him and his family a holy and blessed Christmas season and New Year.

For Christmas Day 2017, the liturgy offers us a wonderful and meaningful reading from John 1:1-18. The Word is Truth and Love made flesh in Baby Jesus, for the redemption and salvation of the world. Without Christmas, there is no Easter. The divine mystery begins by saying Yes to life. The birth of Jesus brings the greatest hope to everyone who welcomes Him:

In the beginning was the Word,

and the Word was with God,

and the Word was God.

He was in the beginning with God.

Want to give Baby Jesus a great and novel gift for Christmas, His birthday? Try shutting off social media for a day, two, a week, the twelve days of Christmas or you decide. Parents can make this a special project for Jesus and spend more family time together, attending liturgical services, praying and just reconnecting with one another. We give up things for Lent, but we can also do it for Advent and Christmas.

Just think of all those hours we spend on a computer.

During Advent, most Christians try to make a special effort to spiritually get ready to celebrate Christmas. It's the lights, the ornaments, the decorations and the dinners. And of course the special liturgical services and prayers for Advent and Christmas day.

This year we were reminded of the meaning of Christmas while calling families that our parish St. Vincent de Paul Society gives some extra help. Normally we know the families that come because we have visited them during the past year.

If you haven't done much for your soul during this time of Advent as we get closer to Christmas, may we suggest the spiritual writings of Fr. Alfred Delp. They can help us get our true priorities in order. Fr. Delp was a Jesuit priest condemned to death by the Nazis in Berlin, Germany. The text titled, The Prison Writings of Father Delp is pure nourishment for the spirit. Here's a little taste of what he teaches us about Advent:

Advent is the time for rousing.

Any Canadian company or organization that wants to apply and qualify for government funds to hire students, must support abortion. This is the same dictatorial position the governing Liberal party implemented during the last election. No Liberal candidate could seek the nomination unless they supported abortion. Now the government will not approve student employment grants to businesses that don't back the culture of death.

This year we saw once again Toronto's wonderful Soulpepper production of A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens at the Young Centre for the Performing

Arts. The tale is as timely as ever. It's a Christian story. Scrooge's conversion of heart has become a classic English tale of love and redemption. Many have seen a film version of the book. Two of the early adaptations were the 1938 film with Reginald Owen, and the other was done in 1951 starring Alastair Sim.

Fear and hate are emotions. Feelings are natural human responses to events, things and people around us. Can we legislate them out of existence? No. Feelings should not be made illegal. Emotions are part of our freedom of thought and belief, as long as one doesn't commit a crime.

This second Sunday of Advent, the congregation at the 9:00am Mass at our Catholic parish was addressed, just before the final blessing, by Ahmed Hussen, Canada's Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship. Hussen is the member of Parliament for York-South Weston. He introduced himself and then told us that he entered politics to serve the people and help them resolve problems they may have with the government regarding pensions, immigrant refugee problems and other issues.

You may not have heard of Bill 34, Manitoba's Medical Assistance in Dying (Protection for Health Professionals and Others) Act. But you should. Here's why. It protects Canadians from being forced to kill other Canadians through euthanasia or physician assisted-suicide. It would be better to scrap the nation's euthanasia legislation entirely but this law at least will give conscience rights to those who object to killing.

See, I have set before you today life and prosperity, death and adversity; I call heaven and earth to witness against you today that I have set before you life and death, blessing and curses. Choose life so that you and your descendants may live.

First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings should be made for everyone, for kings and all who are in high positions, so that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and dignity. This is right and is acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour, who desires everyone to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.
