In Sunday's Gospel, the 30th in Ordinary Time, God commands human beings to love Him above all things. We can love God because God loved us first. He showed us how to love. From this springs charity, as we realize that we are not worthy of this love. It's God's love that teaches and allows us to choose to follow and imitate Him. We have the freedom to say yes to His love or to reject it.

Let's consider the short reading from Matthew 22: 34:40: "But when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees they got together and, to put him to the test, one of them put a further question, "Master, which is the greatest commandment of the Law?" Jesus said to him, "You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.

Last night we attended the "3rd Annual Fr. Boulad Dinner for Christians in the Middle East." It was held at Transfiguration of Our Lord Parish in Toronto. It's charity work supported by the Archdiocese of Toronto. The funds raised will go to the Catholic Near East Welfare Association, CNEWA. The night's goal was to raise $30,000 for Caritas Egypt.

Have you heard of Fr. Boulad? He was born in Alexandria, Egypt. He studied theology and philosophy and went to Lebanon.

The Catholic Church in Canada is dying. The religious crisis is most evident in Quebec. Quebec is experiencing like most of the West a demographic winter. The birth rate is 1.6 per couple, way below the level required to just replace the present population. No politician has the courage to seriously address the problem. Political correctness rules the day. As the Christian community decreases, Canada's leaders welcome Muslim and other immigration.

Want your son or daughter going to university or college to keep their Catholic faith? Do you wish to arm them against the secularism that continues to sweep post-secondary education? Yes, parents can and should let their children know that they need not lose their faith and Christian values in order to get a good higher education.

Canada is no longer headed down the road to one law for some Canadians and other for those who fully accept the progressive politics of diversity. We are there already. Only Canadians who are not aware of what has and is taking place don't yet fully realize just how the nation has changed and not always for the better.

Take the clear example of the city of Ottawa where the annual March for Life is held each year.

In this post, we share with our readers a timely article titled, "Safety and Security" by John Carpay who is a lawyer and founder of The Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms (JCCF). It's about the worrisome trend to restrict freedom of speech in Canada. It was published in the October edition of The Interim, 2017, and we thank them for permission to re-print the column.

The world by now has heard of the allegations against Harvey Weinstein. The Hollywood man used his position of authority to sexually harass, abuse and even assault women. Presently twenty-seven woman have publicly come out telling how Weinstein exploited them sexually. By these accounts, he's a very sick and depraved man who preyed on vulnerable women for sex. It's the behaviour of a pervert and a sexual predator. There was never a need to get consent because Weinstein was a movie mogul.

Choice in education is under government attack around the world. For example, Germany has banned homeschooling. The trend is spreading to other Western countries. There are a few notable exceptions such as Croatia, Hungary and Poland. Now Brazil is trying to outlaw homeschooling. The state has no authority to usurp the rights of parents to have free options in education.

The petition against the controversial Motion-103 can still be signed. It was relaunched by CitizenGo with the intention of reaching 100,000 signatures. If you haven't done so, please do read the Motion-103, get informed and if you agree with the petition, add your name to the list. Silence and inaction will be taken to mean that Canadians agree with Motion-103.

"Diversity is our strength," so says Canada's Prime Minister. But is it truly our strength or the politically correct way to divide the country and silence opposition? Canadians should remember the tweet by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau: "Diversity is our strength ... We celebrate the many different languages spoken in our great country." Really or just political opportunism? The tweet has been used as an open invitation to "refugees" living in America and elsewhere to come to Canada.

See, I have set before you today life and prosperity, death and adversity; I call heaven and earth to witness against you today that I have set before you life and death, blessing and curses. Choose life so that you and your descendants may live.

First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings should be made for everyone, for kings and all who are in high positions, so that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and dignity. This is right and is acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour, who desires everyone to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.
