Today we celebrate the Feast Day of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph. We continue to celebrate the birth of Baby Jesus. The Holy Family brings to the world renewed love, hope and redemption for humanity. We celebrate marriage and family. We celebrate the love of husband and wife. We celebrate God's love for family. We celebrate children as God's gift of life. We celebrate the family as the domestic church. We celebrate family that is the basic building block of society. We celebrate life and what is good and reject death and evil. We thank God for the gift of family.

We share with our readers a short homily for the day given by Pope Benedict XVI, on Sunday, 27 December 2009:

Dear Brothers and Sisters,  Today is Holy Family Sunday.

This week I finished reading Ben Shapiro's book Brainwashed: How Universities Indoctrinate America's Youth. It was published by Thomas Nelson, in 2004. It's a wake-up call about the long overdo need to change higher learning in America. Shapiro wrote it when he was just 20 years old, but is still a text that every parent should read, especially if they have children in college or intend to send them there.

Did you know that the University of Toronto funds the Mark S.Bonham Centre for Sexual Diversity Studies? Students can enrol and earn post-graduate degrees. In their words, the program "Studies offers an undergraduate program, a collaborative graduate specialization (MA and PhD), hosts academic and community events, and promotes research in sexuality studies.

In today's hypersexualized society parents need to take control and leadership on teaching their children about human sexuality. If they don't, schools, social media, films and music do that for them, but so often in an exploitative and mechanistic manner. Canvox is an online organizations with the goal of helping parents with this sensitive task.

This Christmas Day the Gospel reading is from John 1:1-18. There is nothing else to say.

In the beginning was the Word,

and the Word was with God,

and the Word was God.

He was in the beginning with God.

All things came to be through him,

and without him nothing came to be.

What came to be through him was life,

and this life was the light of the human race;

the light shines in the darkness,

and the darkness has not overcome it.

A man named John was sent from God.

Recently the CBC on their comedy program "This Hour Has 22 Minutes" tried to do a funny sketch about Ontario's sex-curriculum by making fun of the position held by Campaign Life Coalition (CLC).  (Read the facts about the curriculum in the link given and not the fake humour news reported by the CBC.) The host of the show interviews two actors as representatives of CLC.

The intent of the piece is to ridicule both CLC and those parents who object to the radical sex-curriculum.

How sad that the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops' (CCCB) Christmas message for 2018 makes no reference to the millions of persecuted Christians around the world. These are our world neighbours suffering and even dying because of the faith. Many have heard of the international story about the Christian woman Aisha Bibi convicted of blasphemy in Pakistan, but the majority never make the news. They suffer in silence and isolation.

As we get closer to Christmas, we share with our readers Pope Benedict XVI's Christmas message for 2012. Often the best way to go forward is to look at what has been soundly said and done in the past. The message is a wish and prayer about the need for truth and peace in our lives and the world. It's an invitation to let the incarnate Word guide our thoughts and deeds. That's relevant instruction. Now the message:

“Veritas de terra orta est!” – “Truth has sprung out of the earth” (Ps 85:12).

Today Canadian Food for Children (CFFC) held their annual Christmas Mass at the warehouse on Lakeshore Rd. East in Mississauga. There were students from two schools in attendance as well volunteers and supporters of the charity. The event began with the singing of Christmas carols followed by the Mass and concluded with refreshments and snacks.

The celebrant for the Mass was Fr. Noel Whelan from St. Anselm's Parish. Both founders of the charity Dr. Andrew Simone and his wife Joan were present.

Fr. Don LaCuesta, pastor of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, has been reprimanded by his superiors for the homily he gave at the funeral Mass for a young man Maison who committed suicide. According to the statement issued by the Archdiocese of Detroit, the celebrant parish priest "was unable to bring comfort to a grieving family at the recent funeral of their beloved son." The parents Jeff and Linda Hullibarger were not happy with the homily and complained. The priest was censured.

See, I have set before you today life and prosperity, death and adversity; I call heaven and earth to witness against you today that I have set before you life and death, blessing and curses. Choose life so that you and your descendants may live.

First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings should be made for everyone, for kings and all who are in high positions, so that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and dignity. This is right and is acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour, who desires everyone to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.
