Canadians need less government control over children and family life, not more
In Quebec, keeping a neglected or mistreated child with their biological family is no longer a government priority. The idea may at first sound like a good policy, but it's not. Nobody can disagree with putting the needs of children first. However, the problem is in the details.
The Quebec provincial government has passed Bill 15, An Act to amend the Youth Protection Act and other legislative provisions. The legislation gives the social service system more control over children in care and less to parents. It used to be that every effort was made to keep even troubled and abused children with their own biological parents. The new law would no longer makes it a priority to put parental and family rights first.
