The Good Friday Reproaches
The Reproaches (Improperia in Latin) is an ancient hymn about the suffering of Christ on the cross. It is usually sung during the Veneration of the Cross at the Good Friday liturgical service. The sorrowful Christ says, "My people, my people what have I done to you?" The answer is for each of us to give.
Christ speaks directly to us and asks why we have turned against Him after all that he has done for our redemption and salvation. In most services today, the hymn is no longer sung. Is it because we don't want to be reminded that every time we sin we keep nailing the Lord to the cross? The hymn calls us to turn away from sin and live a virtuous life that God wants for everyone.
Latin
Popule meus, quid feci tibi?
Aut in quo contristavi te?
Responde mihi.
