On January 31, the American Anglican Catholic Church, released a statement about Reverend Calvin Robinson. It was in response to the larg part of the talk Robinson gave at the National Pro-Life Summit in Washington, DC. The bishops’ only concern is that Robinson ended his speech by placing his right hand on his heart and then extending his arm towards the audience. The act might be interpreted as a Nazi salute and in line with the MAGA movement. Provoking the opposition is the new “sin” against the woke. And so Robinson was immediately cancelled from his pastoral duties. His license revoked. No need to even speak to him. Would this have been the reaction from his superiors had Robinson been promoting open borders or the sexual letters of the alphabet?
Here's the bishops’ statement:
At approximately 3:00 pm today (1/29) members of the College of Bishops of the ACC were made aware of a post made on X showing the end of a speech made by Calvin Robinson at the National Pro-Life Summit in Washington, DC. In it, he closed his comments with a gesture that many have interpreted as a pro-Nazi salute.
While we cannot say what was in Mr. Robinson’s heart when he did this, his action appears to have been an attempt to curry favour with certain elements of the American political right by @provoking its opposition. Mr. Robinson had been warned that online trolling and other such actions (whether in service of the left or right) are incompatible with a priestly vocation and was told to desist. Clearly, he has not, and as such, his license in this Church has been revoked. He is no longer serving as a priest in the ACC.
Furthermore, we understand that this is not just an administrative matter. The Holocaust was an episode of unspeakable horror, enacted by a regime of evil men. We condemn Nazi ideology and anti-Semitism in all its forms. And we believe that those who mimic the Nazi salute, even as a joke or an attempt to troll their opponents, trivialize the horror of the Holocaust and diminish the sacrifice of those who fought against its perpetrators. Such actions are harmful, divisive, and contrary to the tenets of Christian charity.
Finally, we pray that God will give us grace to lay aside our unhappy divisions, and we commend ourselves to his Almighty protection.
Please note, the Reverend Calvin Robinson is not, and never has been a member of, let alone a clergyman in the Anglican Catholic Church Diocese of the United Kingdom. The decision to receive him into the ACC in 2024 and the subsequent decision to revoke his licence was made by the authorities responsible for the ACC Diocese of the Midwest, USA following the correct canonical and established practice.
Most MSM reports that have come out since the bishops' statement support the decision they made. But this doesn't make it morally just. The fact that Reverend Robinson made a speech in support of unborn life has taken a back seat. The narrative has become the so called "salute." And even if his gesture was inappropriate, he later made it clear in a post on X that his intention was never meant to be pro-Nazi or to trivialize the Holocaust.
How does cancelling him make anything right or better? Silencing a person is never a good idea. Curtailing free speech harms everyone. It sends a chilling message to those who believe in democracy. And lastly, how is revoking his license Christian? Are we not called to forgive one another?
